What I learned in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has never been one of our favorite travel destinations, but we always look forward to our visit. It's what's outside the strip or box that grabs our attention.

What I learned is that there are countless beautiful State and National Parks all clustered close by, and so little time to visit them all.  The warm  dry climate is also a major attraction in the winter and early spring.

In all our travels, we have never stepped foot in the Grand Canyon. We made it our main attraction on this trip before our travel conference in Vegas.

Here are a few destinations you won't want to miss on you next trip to Vegas. Think outside the Las Vegas Box. . .

  • Red Rock Canyon - The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada is an area managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of its National Landscape Conservation System, and protected as a National Conservation Area.
  • Mount Charleston - Mount Charleston, at 11,916 feet, is the highest mountain in both the Spring Mountains and Clark County, in Nevada, United States.
  • Valley of Fire SP - World-renowned for its 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops nestled in gray and tan limestone, Valley of Fire State Park contains ancient, petrified trees and petroglyphs dating back more than 2,000 years.
  • Hoover Dam - Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona.
  • Grand Canyon NP - The Grand Canyon in Arizona is a natural formation distinguished by layered bands of red rock, revealing millions of years of geological history in cross-section. Vast in scale, the canyon averages 10 miles across and a mile deep along its 277-mile length.
  • Route 66 - If you’re not yet a die-hard Route 66 fan, traveling the old route across Arizona is bound to convert you.
  • Zion National Park NP - Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs.
  • Death Valley NP - Death Valley National Park straddles eastern California and Nevada. It’s known for Titus Canyon, with a ghost town and colorful rocks, and Badwater Basin’s salt flats, North America's lowest point.
  • Lake Las Vegas - Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada, refers to a 320-acre artificial lake and the 3,592-acre developed area around the lake. The area is sometimes referred to as the Lake Las Vegas Resort.
  • And don't forget the Welcome to Las Vegas Welcome Sign!
